Ladies, men today need defending. Especially dads. I know that there are plenty of dads who are out of the picture, disinterested, not part of their families’ lives. But, in my experience, dads these days are pretty great.
They are hard-working, self-sacrificing, and practical. They think about how they can be better husbands and fathers. They have taken on housework, diapering, and bathing kids. They go to school functions, take kids to appointments, and generally go above and beyond what dads were traditionally expected to do.
But, turn on the TV at any time of the day. From cartoons to teen shows on Nickelodeon and Disney to primetime sitcoms. Who is the moron in every single show? Who is out of touch, useless, and selfish? Who is the bumbling idiot? You guessed it: the dad. Next, tune into any female comedian, writer, or commentator, and you’ll find that male bashing is a favorite topic of conversation. Men, according to these women, are nothing more than money in the bank account and sperm donors. It seems that women have free reign to say whatever they want about men, and it’s deemed acceptable, and, for the most part, true.
How sad for fathers today that they are so involved in their families, trying so hard, working and sacrificing only to be told at every turn that it doesn’t matter what they do–women still think they’re dumb.
I know this is an unpopular idea among women these days, but why don’t we become true supporters of men, especially dads? Why don’t we appreciate them and talk about how great they are instead of constantly discouraging them from becoming what we want them to be? When we run men into the ground, we show them that we expect nothing more from them than selfishness and stupidity. I don’t know about you, but I hold men to a much higher standard than that.
I love hearing from you!
