Hope for Those of Us Who are Confused by Fashion

If you’ve been reading the blog for awhile, you are well aware that I am confused by current fashions.  I go, I shop, and I walk away empty-handed, wondering what I’m supposed to wear.  That is, when I get to shop, which is rarely.  With three kids, and living in a small town with no shopping, it’s difficult to get away even to window shop.

But, lately.  Well, lately I have discovered one of the most fun ways to shop.  Stitch Fix!  Have you heard of it yet?  I have heard bloggers talking about it forever, and I always thought that it was out of my reach, that it would be too expensive or that there’s some catch to it that would make it an impossibility for a stay-at-home pastor’s wife.  But, not so!  It’s easy, it’s fun, and it won’t break the bank!

All you do is go online to sign up and answer a bunch of questions about what kinds of colors, styles, and trends that you like.  You are assigned a personal stylist.  That’s right–there is a way for people who aren’t zillionaires to have a personal stylist!  I told her every quirk and hangup that I have about clothes.  And, two Stitch Fix boxes later, she is totally nailing it.

Each box is filled with five items, from jeans to dresses to tops to jewelry.  I try the clothes on in my own house, with my own jewelry, coordinating pieces, and shoes.  I get Chad’s opinions on it all, and I choose some beautiful piece to keep.  These aren’t the types of clothes that I, Mrs. 75% Off Shopper, usually get.  They are basically luscious and beautiful, unique and luxurious.

For each box I pay a $20 styling fee.  But, when I choose to keep something, that $20 applies toward the cost of the item.  So, it almost feels like you’re getting $20 off, since that money is already gone.  These are the Jedi mind tricks I play on myself to help me enjoy the experience.  The items in my boxes have ranged in price from $25 (jewelry) to $88 (jeans).  Granted, this is more than I would normally spend on clothes, but I choose to get boxes once every two months, so I consider it reasonable, even in my frugality, to get one nice piece six times a year.

I look forward to seeing my Stitch Fix box show up.  I am so picky and so hard to fit, but somehow my stylist has found all of these great articles of clothing that are just right for me.  She even sent me jeans that fit!  That’s some sort of supernatural event.

Plus, after I get a box I can go online and tell her exactly what I liked and didn’t like about each piece.  Every time we interact she learns a little bit more about what I want or need. Stitch Fix even has petite and maternity sizes!

When I’ve decided what to keep, I just hang it in my closet, stick everything else in the pre-paid envelope, and mail it back.  And, probably my favorite thing about shopping this way is that someone else is deciding what I should try on, so I’m trying things I would never choose in the store–and I’m LIKING THEM!  So fun!
