Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar. And, boy, are Christians happy about it. I mean, Christians are jumping up and down for this Texas boy for his big win because he actually thanked God in his acceptance speech. He did, he gave God credit and he thanked his wife like he should and he gave a rambling speech that really made me wonder why they weren’t starting up the music to cut him off. They let Matthew talk for almost four minutes, and the clip of his speech is all over the internet.
Christians are so proud.
And, I can’t blame us. I mean, how often do we hear a major celebrity, an Oscar winner, no less, identifying with us? How often do we get that kind of star power in our corner? It almost makes us seem sort of cool and legitimate.
I liked his speech, although I thought it was a little heavy on the Matthew McConaughey. He’s chasing a hero, who is himself in ten years? Really? But, no matter. He mentioned God and that’s all that counts. It obviously shows that he loves the Lord and lives his life for Him and we will all be fans of his forever because of this speech.
But, there’s one tiny issue with setting Matthew McConaughey up as our next great Christian idol. And, the problem is the movie he won the Oscar for. And pretty much every other movie he’s ever made. (Anyone remember a little film called Magic Mike?) According to pluggedin.com, Dallas Buyer’s Club opens with McConaughey’s character having sex with two girls at the same time in a rodeo stall. That’s only the beginning of the explicit sexual content in the movie. In addition to the nudity, masturbation, and pornography, the film contains over 100 f-words and God’s name is used as a curse word over 20 times.
Matthew McConaughey made this movie, which he was rewarded by Hollywood for making, which goes out into our society and poisons the hearts and minds of our men, women, and young people. And then he gets up to accept his award for making filth that turns hearts away from God, and he thanks God for the opportunity, and Christians applaud him as if he has done something incredible.
We have got to get over our obsession with celebrity and start making connections between what people say and what they actually do. It is never going to be a good thing for Christianity for us to hold these celebrities up as examples of what a Christian should be. If we want to show the world examples of Christianity that should make us cheer, it’ll be our faithful pastors, our grandmothers who have lived quiet sacrificial lives, our friends who would lay down their lives for us, the teachers who go to school every day and live out the commands to love the unlovable and to value every life.
Not Matthew McConaughey. I’m sure he’s a fun guy to hang around with, and I bet he’s a great dad and probably a really good actor. But he is not the next great champion for Christianity.
And that’s probably why I’m not a member of the Academy. Thank you, and good night.

Couldn’t have said it better myself – it almost feels like actors do this as a publicity stunt – think of how much more attention he has now – it’s a shame. But thankfully God knows our true hearts.

Thanks for your comment, Jennifer!

No one is trying to make him a hero …. He does a Job just like anyone else … I think its great that thanked God for his rewards…. If you don’t like post or movies just don’t watch or read them !!! I’m a big fan of this man and think people need to revisit aides they have forgotten what it can do !!! And yes I’m a Christian !!
Big Trick
Any one talk the talk, but not every one that says Lord, lord walks the walk!! The devil some time wears sheep`s clothing.Beware, the Bible tells us.

Wow. I’m glad I don’t have anyone counting up the number of my sins. This website should be called “yourmomhasajudgementalblog.com”

Nice to read something from a person who has common sense and god sense. Im glad you posted, people need to think before they leap ! Just because a person spouts out the name god, means absolutely nothing ! even demons believe in God and they shudder. Hope Matthew turns one day. who knows ? you will know them by their fruit. Lets all agree to pray for Matthew ! God can do anything ! Blessings to all

I found myself exclaiming YES! with everything you’ve written here! It’s so refreshing to read this! I feel the exact same way! Wow..so he acknowledged God with his lips but welcome to the superficial club…what in that movie or in his movies acknowledge God? I haven’t watched a lot of his movies for the main reason that i don’t feel that they honor God…at all..not one bit…so that’s great that he mentioned God, but He wants so much more than our words. Thank you for sharing something that i feel is so important! Have a great day!
Melissa
Thanks so much for taking the time to say this!

Do you all realize that you’re judging somebody? That’s not our job. We’re actually told NOT to do that in the Bible. Does this make you feel better than him? How have you boldly acknowledged God with your actions lately? How dare all of you. It’s THIS kind of judgmental behavior and words that gives Christians a bad name. How do you think God feels about you talking about one of his children like this. Aren’t you glad that no one on this earth has tallied all of your sins up? I sure am! Don’t judge ppl. It’s not your job. Focus on God and take the big plank out of your eye.

Amen and well said! Having a compromising spirit us what has slowly decayed society from within to begin with. Way to stand up and say it loud and clear!

I haven’t seen this movie, nor Magic Mike, but I do know these are roles he plays, not him. I am certainly not a huge star fan, but I loved his speech, we are all sinners every single one of us, weather you are telling a sinful story or sinning in anyway, hopefully most that read your blog didn’t go see the movie, just proud our God was giving credit for his opportunities , I am in no way a judge so I don’t know Matthews relationship with our Heavenly Father, and choose to believe he is just like the rest of us, a sinner and a believer a work in progress, saved by his grace.
Kimberly
But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
(Eph 5:3-11)
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
(1Jn 1:6)
Belinda, It doesn’t really matter what we think of Matthew McConaughey, these “roles he plays” is a reflection of who he is – his fruits.
Thank you Melissa! Great post!
Melissa
Thanks for this, Kimberly!

Well said.
Melissa
Belinda, I see no distinction between roles he plays and who he is. I doubt that I would be taken seriously as a Christian if I told everyone on Sunday how important God is in my life and then made pornographic movies during the week. I would only be playing a role, but people would certainly see a disconnect between that and my professions of God’s prominent place in my life. Yet, when Hollywood stars do these things, we tend to praise them as if they are living for God. I just don’t see it. Thanks so much for your comment!
N
Agree…these are roles. Not him. Sadly we ALL put on roles in our daily lives and are forced to put God in a box (or at least not run around and exclaiming our faith and views) I agree with your blog but also agree with the fact that its a role-not him. We can’t really throw a stone at him, no matter how Chrisitan we are because I’m one of the biggest sinners I know. I appreciate his thanking God-and thought his speech was actually spectacular! Why not chase yourself & be your own hero? Its far better than chasing after a ‘star’ if your faith is right & your life with God is right-then strive to improve yourself for His kingdom!
Patty
I agree, we are not the one to judge. Seems like everyone thinks they know what Matthew and God feel. When did he invite God in his life? We don’t know. Seems like this should be between Matthew and God. As a christian we are to be there for EVERYONE to reach the kingdom of God. Listen to yourselves. Would you hear Jesus say any of this to Matthew??
Jenni
No one is ever “forced to put God in a box.” It’s a choice.
Carol
Well said, Belinda! Lots of judges on this blog. If we removed the planks from all the eyes on here we could build mansion.
Beverly Elliot
Well said Belinda! Yes, let’s not forget all you judges out there we all sin!
Belinda
Jesus was kind loving and forgiving, I don’t know MM and never will, I have no idea what he does or how he lives his private life, I haven’t seen this movie, but just maybe after being a part of such intense movie, it may have brought him even closer to his redeemer. I have no idea but I am still not judging anyone, I was always taught you can’t be a judge and witness too! May God Bless you all with kind, loving and forgiving hearts! None of us are Saintly or Godly we are all sinners save by Grace!! We cannot work our way to heaven!! He said you have a friend in Jesus! Is this not true, just think how many people like me believed that statement and it was heard world wide!
carolynystaley
Hoo boy…..another misfire. The movie was about HIV/AIDS and the sex scenes were to set up the background of how AIDS is spread, not to glorify sex. Yes, many past movies MM made are raunchy, but most have had a redeeming moral beyond the Xrated scenes. Not for young eyes, but clear enough for adults to figure out the story. Whenever anyone gives glory to God, why pick that apart? Why question motives? Did Jesus ever do that?
JM
Exactly what I was thinking carolynystaley! God places people where they are for a purpose. God gives us the talents we possess. Mathew’s talent is acting. It was a role, acting to tell a story. Not something he actually did. Not who he really is. He is an ACTOR. And because of his God given talent, he was in a position to be up in front of MILLIONS of people and giving God the glory! Therefore, putting Christianity in the eyes and ears of those that DID watch the movie or who might not have seen it, but were watching the Oscars. Now, there will probably be some of those that watched the movie or who were fans of Mathew that will refuse to watch anything else he is in because he proclaimed his Christianity, but MAYBE just MAYBE, there are a few who weren’t Christians whose eyes may be open now because God placed him in front of MILLIONS of people whom he has just witnessed to!
Melissa
Words alone don’t make a very good witness. And, I disagree that the roles don’t have a bearing on who he is. Please see my reply to Belinda below.
Melissa
Carolyn, I don’t think adults benefit from watching a man have sex with two women, no matter the point of the movie. And, Jesus actually talked a lot about motives.
I just don’t think that any “art” is worth poisoning hearts and minds over. And, I don’t think that simply saying God is important in your life makes it true.
Hilary
Melissa, amen.
JB
Yes he did: Matthew 15:1-9
carolynystaley
…and couldn’t that very passage of scripture be used to confront believers who make judgments about other’s testimony? The heart is what God desires, and while I believe the motive behind this post is worthy, we get in trouble fast when we start judging what’s in another person’s heart. Even with all the trash MM has appeared in as an ACTOR, if he’s come around now, that’s fantastic.
botwinick
Carolyn,
You asked me if Jesus would do that. I clearly showed that, indeed, Jesus does question and judge the motives of those who put on a great show while giving “glory to God”. Matthew 6:5-6
botwinick
Now, my question for you, Carolyn, would as follows: If Jesus is our model of whom we should be like, should we also not do everything Jesus did? Isn’t that basically the heart of your “What would Jesus do” question?
carolynystaley
Yes ,botwinick, Jesus did warn us in particular of those who gave, prayed, served for “show” and to not be like that. He also had a heart for the marginalized, sick, poor, sinful who needed forgiveness. I only hope as often as I have the opportunity to point people to God that I’ll do it in a heartbeat, though it will never be the Oscars. I know where the critics will come from—the pew, just as in Jesus’ day.
MandyC
My thoughts exactly carolynstaley! The only “Christian idol” we should have is GOD/Jesus/Holy Ghost! We are called to love as Christ loved not to judge people. In my opinion this blog entry is a major reason people step away from Christianity! Let he who is without sin cast the first stone-john 8:7
botwinick
Do you believe that we should do what Jesus did? I asked Carolyn and she doesn’t seem to be interested in answering as of yet. Perhaps, you might help me understand your position better.
Follower of Jesus
Melissa, Thank you thank you thank you. I don’t know how people say that just because he plays the roles doesn’t mean he can’t be a Christian? Really? For instance, women flock to the theaters to see him strip to nothing in “Magic Mike”, which to me is like entering a strip club and watching people strip to lust after them. I think we all take the “Do not Judge” passage and twist it to what we want it to mean. We pray for Matthew, that his heart would be bent towards Jesus. HIs lifestyle just sadly is not that of a Christian. I’m sorry it just isn’t. I know oh do I know I’m a sinner, but DAILY repent and strive to live my life for Jesus. I love what someone said earlier about the people we should look up to are the people that are pointing us to Jesus. The biggest and most talked about command that Jesus gave us was to GO and make disciples. We live like Jesus has asked us to live and we love the Matthews of this world that are sadly proclaiming God or Jesus with their lips but not their lives.
Sue Turner
Amen. I actually saw the movie. Yes, i am a Christian. More than the movie being about gay, straight …. whatever. It was about the hold that drug companies have on peoples lives and how one man struggled to make treatment available to all. It was about how being told he had 3 months to live and qualified for a drug trial…but would not be guaranteed that he wouldn’t receive a placebo….to that he said….I’ll figure this out myself …. he did ….made a lot of people mad (mainly the federal government) and made so called out of the FDA norm treatment plans available to thousands of people suffering with HIV…ergo the Dallas Buyers Club….plus lived for 8 more years because he chose to buck the system. Let’s just not be so harsh. I’m done.
Wanda
Thank you for saying exactly what I was thinking.
Hilary
If the movie was made purely for the sake of entertainment, that’s one thing. But because MM brought a god into the picture, and Christians think what he said was jim dandy, let’s think about the merit of the movie itself. Lots of people do a lot of good things, but those things will not be sustained in eternity. Jesus told us to store up our treasure in Heaven. That is salvation, glory, HIM. What in this movie had redeeming, eternal value that will not be destroyed at the end? I’m not saying we are not to do good works, I am questioning the eternal weight of this movie FOR CHRIST according to what He commands in His Word, which is 19″Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” He also exhorted Timothy, via Paul, to “preach the Gospel.” The Gospel is the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. Where in the movie was any of this done? What was accomplished for His kingdom? That people did good things? Lots of good people doing good things will end up in hell.
Carol
Well said!

Couldn’t agree more with you Carolynystaley!!! Why do so many people have a problem with Christians?? Because they are so judge mental and quick to point a finger. I don’t think Christians are looking at Matthew and thinking wow this must be a profit among us. I think they are thinking it is great to hear a speech about how his whole life isn’t totally wrapped around Hollywood. He could have made a speech like his fellow actor but he was the few, the very few to let me see him with a little respect. Does this mean we are going to worship him and take every piece of advice he gives, I would think not , but even the most “Christian” people should not be giving any sort of advice. Why don’t we just do the one command Jesus dies for us to learn.. LOVE. If Christians could ever get this right maybe we could actually get somewhere.. Maybe, just maybe people won’t look at Christianity with such hatred but with a willingness to want to know more about this Jesus that has shown us what it is to love others

Amen, amen, amen. I’ve been wanting to address this in a post myself, but the words just haven’t come to me yet. But they did come to you. This is solid. I was thinking last night, Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged God and even gave God credit for somethings. But I’m pretty sure Nebuchadnezzar was not a devoted follower of the Living God.
Melissa
Great point, Bruce!

Thank you for that blog. As Christians, we often play jump rope with the the blurred lines we call “righteousness”. Thank you for drawing a line in the sand and speaking truth.

Thank you, Christy!

Amen, I was thinking the exact thing when I saw the replay of his speech, “wasn’t he in that show about male strippers?”
Melissa
I know, Deana!! Thanks for your comment!

Good point, and I agree. But I would also say this is true for athletes, singers, and politicians/political parties that Christians seem to glorify and get excited about just because they use God’s name in public. Not saying there aren’t genuine Christians out there, but we must always be aware that they are human, and humans never deserve the glory. That belongs to God. The more we glorify people, the more we are going to be let down and embarrassed when they fall, because we all fall.
davidzook
Hi Melissa. I completely understand where you’re going with this post, but I’ve got a question. If there was a movie made about Abraham, see Genesis 12-25:18, how should the director handle the incest scene in the last part of Genesis 19? Should he go full Monty to make everyone really uncomfortable, even nonbelievers, in order to reveal the absolute depravity of the act? Or is there another way that he could portray it in order to elicit the same emotional response to get the point across?
Say he picked option one, and the movie won the Academy Award for Best Picture. The actors get up on stage and thank God for giving them the opportunity to tell the story, including the incest scene, as it was recorded in Scripture.
How should Christians respond to the actors praising God for the opportunity to reveal the depravity in the world?
Quick review: Lot’s two daughters schemed to get their father drunk so they could have an incestous relationship with him to preserve his offspring. He got so drunk that he passed out. Then on consecutive nights each one of Lot’s daughters slept with him. Obviously, it’s so long and so many ways, yet the scene is Scripture so we can’t ignore it.
Melissa
David, I appreciate what you’re trying to do here. But, I absolutely do not believe that putting actors on screen engaged in pretend sexual acts of any kind is something that glorifies God. Even if an actor is portraying Lot and actors are portraying his daughters. There is no point in that at all. The incest could be implied if it was necessary. God doesn’t need movies to enhance His word. And, we don’t need actors to portray the depravity of the world. We do a great job of revealing the depravity of the world in real life.
davidzook
I would agree that simulated sex does not glorify God and I would also agree that there are other artistic ways to elicit the full emotional affect the viewer should feel about the act of incest, rather than gratuitously or graphically depict it. I would say the same thing about regular sex scenes in mainstream movies too.
In one sense, I would agree with you that God doesn’t need film to enhance his Word. He doesn’t need anything to enhance anything of his. But in another sense, film done well depicting the depravity of man and the good news of redemption buttresses our faith.
For example, I had a few conversations with Bible reading Christians after they saw the Passion of Christ and they said that watching that film, particularly the graphically violent and cruel parts, brought a vividness and depth to their faith that they hadn’t experienced before. It impacted them in profound ways and caused them to reconsider Jesus.
So, I would differ with you as I do believe there is a place for actors to portray the depravity of the world. For without the bad news, how can there be good news?
Keep up the good work!
Jennifer Ezell
You are so right! I remeber all my girlfriends making plans to go see Magic Mike and inviting me along, which I declined. But when it came out on T.V. I decided if all my Christian friends watched it, surely its harmless.?.? I eventually changed the channel in utter discussed! I have no desire as a christian woman to see that filth. I know I sound like a prude and I am not anywhere close to perfect. I cave and watch shows I shouldn’t sometimes but what made me turn the channel was almost pornographic. I dont judge my friends for watching that or anything else because this world so convincingly tells us all that “its fine” and basically “God will get over it!” We all need to be fully armed and fully submerged in Gods word. We must get prayed up and commit our hearts to our true love or Jesus…
Karen Brown
I too was proud to hear this speech but I have never watched his movies. Soo, if I had known him…I would have because of his movies, ridiculed this speech, yet…because I didn’t know him or his movies, I thought his speech glorified God. Fact: if people don’t know his movies yet heard that speech…God will be glorified!
Melissa
I hope you’re right, Karen! God can do anything.
Unclear
James 4:11-12
Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
Clear to me
Yes, this! ^^^
Lots of judging in this post.
Jenni
Actually, the Bible commands taking the plank out SO THAT you can rightly see to judge the speck. There is a fine line between “judgmentalness” and “restoration.” But we can’t throw out the baby with the bathwater. There is a proper form of “judging” found in Scripture. I’m not saying this article does or does not qualify…just a point to consider.
Amy Dillon
WOW, I wasn’t aware of the roles he played in his movies. I think you’re very right. It’s hard to look up to someone who speaks one way and acts another. But just remember that we are all sinners! I obviously don’t know Matthew’s heart, but I DO know that Satan is very powerful in this world. He gets hold on each and every one of us, just in different ways. Even our “faithful pastors, our grandmothers who have lived quiet sacrificial lives, our friends who would lay down their lives for us, the teachers who go to school every day and live out the commands to love the unlovable and to value every life” slip up. We just don’t necessarily see it as much as we see celebrities and their mistakes. I don’t know Matthew McConaughey. I’ve never seen any of his movies. I don’t know anything about him except that he’s a pretty good lookin fella. But I know that God loves him just the same as he loves you and me, even if he might what some would call a “lousy Christian.” In fact, I think we all might be lousy Christians.. we think mean thoughts, we hate, we gossip.. We do all the things that God has commanded us not to do on a daily basis. Unfortunately, we can all be a bit hypocritical at times. But I’m very thankful that God still allows us to be a part of His Kingdom.
I’m sorry, I’ve rambled. I hope my post didn’t bring offense to you in any way. It definitely wasn’t supposed to. (: I enjoyed your post! Have a beautiful day!
Wanda
Thank you, Becca.I believe that MM would be the first to acknowledge that he’s a sinner, hopefully one who’s saved by grace. Isn’t it possible that his expression of gratitude to God actually did more good than harm. I know it meant a lot to me, a 76-year-old Christian, who shouted Yesss, when God was acknowledged before millions of people around the world. Why try to destroy the impact for good his statements made? Leave it to God to accept or deny MM’s thanks.
Becca
Hi Melissa! I read how you responded to David’s reply. Are you saying omit parts of the story because it has sexual content or because you don’t want non believers to know the unacceptable facts? It’s in the bible. I find this blog a little on the judgmental side. God tells us not to judge others. We should pray for each other and lift each other up. We are all sinners. Yes, some of his movies are not great but we do not know the path he is going down. Maybe he is trying to change his ways. We don’t know his personal relationship with God. Instead of bashing him, maybe we should pray for him. He did do what many seem not to do today. He thanked God and not many people in Hollywood do that anymore. I have made plenty of mistakes in my life and everyday is struggle to do better but I would hate to have people in my life that tell me I shouldn’t thank God because I have done horrible things. I need people in my life to be uplifting. Matthew McConaughey is not my hero, God is.
Hilary
Sinners are in the Bible. It is the way of redemption. But God did not include all the sordid details of all that sin. He told us about the top layers because we need to know there is forgiveness in Him. He did not say to roll in the mud and make a film out of it.
Stephanie
Many celebrities and sports stars start their speeches with ” First I want to thank God…” then they go on to curse, sin and do other things I’m sure God isn’t ok with. It’s become THE thing to do. I recently watched an awards show for Christian movies and one of the entertainers during the show was Billy Ray Cyrus who has stated publicly he supports Mileys actions and performances. He did a Christian song and got a standing O. I would hardly think he is an icon of Christian behavior. Thank goodness we all have brains and can see through what the media wants us to believe about those we are supposed to “look up to”. I haven’t seen any of Matthew’s movies as if they are rated any higher than pg 13 we don’t watch.
Melissa
You guys do realize you’re judging me when you judge me for judging, right? Who are you to judge whether I’m judging? 🙂
Stephanie
Isn’t that like that line from Seinfeld? “I can’t tolerate intolerance!” I personally don’t judge as much as possible. The bible says to love your neighbor and your enemy so no matter what someone believes, how they live or who they live with, it’s not my problem. I am only to care for them, love them and show by example what it is to be a Christian.
Belinda
lol, I don’t think we are judging you, just giving our opinion, that’s what makes it a good blog!
Melissa
I love this. I love your outlook—-Love it so much that I re-posted it on my facebook and BOY am I getting a lashing…..help 🙂 anyway thanks for making me think this morning, even though my blood pressure is a little elevated because people are ignorant! haha!
Melissa
Melissa, I know the feeling! ha! Thanks so much for reposting!
Sheila Doughty
Actually, I think I can learn from everyone, even MM, and my take away? Thank God, Be Grateful, Love those that God has Given you, Seek to live in a way that I’m better in 10 years. –Which is part of living forward, being more, making choices that will make me better in 10 years. (serving God)
What I didn’t see? is “be judgmental” “be perfect” “Look down on those who slipped and fell or made choices I would never make.” Nope, those are “Christian” traits I see far to much of that MM left out of his speech.
Melissa
Sheila, it feels like you are judging me. I think everyone makes judgments.
Sheila Doughty
I don’t know you from one post to judge you. Just like I can’t know if MM is a Christian based on one speech. It’s not our place to judge. We haven’t walked where that person has walked.
Elizabeth
I’m wondering how thanking “God” has anything to do with Christianity or beige a follower of Christ? A lot of people mention God with no real belief in the almighty creator, and even less respect for Jesus Christ being the only way to the Father. If Matthew Mac ever says, I want to thank my Lord and savior Jesus Christ, then we can pay attention, and call him to repentance for being a stumbling block to many!
Alison
I thought Christians were supposed to just love each other? If you haven’t seen the movie how can you comment on it? Dallas Buyers Club is a big step in the right direction in creating awareness about uncomfortable issues. AIDS isn’t pretty. It isn’t a kids movie—it’s for adults.
Despite that, apparently thanking God and acknowledging him isn’t good enough. NO ONE is good enough to be your Christian hero if you are looking for someone perfect.
Christina
Couldn’t agree more Allison.
Jessica
Ok, I’m not usually a commenter and I saw the speech after the oscars, not during. Before debating movies, roles, etc. maybe we should look at what he really said about God. Is the God described by MM the God of the Bible? “When you’ve got God, you got a friend. And that friend is you.” “gratitude reciprocates”?
Christina
Am I the only one else who caught that? It’s great he brought up God, but which one? I’m shocked his speech made such waves.
Christina
I read a great article called ‘Cultivation and Creation’ by Andy Crouch. I would recommend all read it. Anytime our God is praised, it’s not ‘a win for us’, it’s a win for Him. This is His story not ours. Maybe we should spend more time celebrating his boldness in the fact that he not only thanked God, but gave several reasons why. It should be noted that Dallas Buyers Club does have a few inappropriate scenes but the true story is about one’s man’s journey from poor life decisions to fighting for the rights of AIDS patients. His fight led to the FDA allowing a certain helpful drug to be used and changed the way medical doctors use AZT on AIDS patients. It was a ‘win’ for those who suffer with this disease. And if Christians are looking for something else to put on a pedestal and praise, his name is Jesus. Not Matthew, Kurt, Mercy Me or the next big Christian movie. Let’s focus more on encouraging than tearing down.
Elizabeth
I’m sure glad Jesus loved us enough to tell us when we were being a brood of wipers, or a perverse generation, or ye of little faith! Sometimes encouragement and love need to take the form of good reminders about the standards the Bible holds for us. If we can assume that MM is a Christian based on that speech, then I could quote several speeches that Hitler made that would lead you to believe the same. Lets continue to pray for him and others like him! But, lets be careful not to throw our pearls before swine.
Tammy
Jesus calls us all to love one another and not to judge. That is left for God, for He is the only one who truly knows our hearts. I have read all the comments above and it does sound like we are all judging each other a little, while we do not truly know each others hearts. Remember, the woman in the Bible that Pilate wanted to stone? Jesus, said let the man who can say he has not sinned, throw the first stone. Well it is the same for us. We are not sinless. In some of our comments, we sound as if maybe our sins are not as bad as Matthews, ie; sometimes allowing yourself to watch those movies..etc. To God, all sin is the same. Even if you are just thinking something. I appreciate your blog Melissa, and God knows your heart and what you are trying to accomplish by posting it. He uses each of us in different ways to reach different types of people. But we are all His people…no matter how clean we live our lives or whether or not we call ourselves Christian. God is the only one that truly knows whether we really are for Him or not. In the Bible, he uses people that are not living the Christian life to bring others to Him. In life He does the same thing. Sometimes, maybe not for you, but for those who are attracted to a more edgy, dark life…those movies can make an impression on them. Some people have to hit rock bottom to see the things that others find without question at all. Life is precious and intricate. Only God knows how to reach each of His people, and He will go to all measures to do just that! Matthew went threw a very dangerous transformation to make this movie, losing major weight. Not a lot of people could handle that process…maybe God did think Matthew was the one…having been in that type of life where it was promiscuous, etc….maybe He was taking a believable character and placing Him in the role…who knows. I am a believer that everything happens for a reason and as it is planned. But even if you don’t believe that…maybe in going through this process….Matthew came to the realization that God is the reason for his everything. When a sinner comes to church and confesses his sins and asks God to enter into his heart, do we say he is just saying that in front of the congregation and he doesn’t really mean it because of his past reputation?? What kind of Christian does that? Only God knows his heart. We are not to judge, only to love. Those of us that think we don’t sin as much should be good examples of Christ’s love to those who are learning. Acceptance and love is a start. This response is not a judgement on anyone…simply an observation and an opinion. God bless you all.
Melissa
Tammy, you say that this is just your opinion and an observation, but in reality it is a judgment. You are judging me. And, I’m okay with that. We all have to make judgments in life. I appreciate the kind tone of your comment. But, it is interesting that your consider your views opinions and observations, but my views as judgments. Can you clarify the difference? Thanks so much for your comment!

So wait, you never even saw The Dallas Buyer’s Club? I guess that’s why you glossed over the fact that his character got aids as a result of his promiscuity, and found redemption through helping people in the face of tyranny. Sounds pretty Christian to me.
jackcaliber
No, wait. I thought that last one didn’t post. How do you delete posts?
Melissa
I’ll delete one of them for you, Caleb!

Well said. It’s a shame that someone receives this caliber of recognition for performing this one “act” that should be practiced daily. I said to my husband, “It’s funny that he’s getting praised for thanking God, but I guess it’s a big deal these days for such people.” Really?
Sarah
I agree. And I don’t. I agree that as Christians we should guard our hearts and our pride from every joe-blow who makes a claim. Open your eyes, think for yourself, focus on the real facts; not whatever they are sugar coated in! I do want to add in some food-for-thought. 🙂 This may or may not apply here, I’m not incredibly familiar with m.m’s work and have not seen this oscar winning movie at all. But, it is less important what he did in the roll and more important how that character is received/perceive. Not just in this case but in every case. Was he a porn-watching, slut-screwing hero who won over viewers everywhere, or was he a misguided man who found a better way to do things and was playing the role of someone who doesn’t have their life together. Christian plot lines aside, if we get it in our minds that Christians can’t be actors/actresses unless they are playing saints, then I think we are on the wrong track. Many beautiful biblical (and non biblical) figures began in sin-filled lives and were used to do wonderful things through grace and forgiveness. I don’t really say this as an objection to this post, but more as something to keep in mind when we watch movies. What is the story of that sinful life/man/woman/family/company/etc teaching and saying to the people watching it. Is it: this is the example of a good life that ends well and leads to happiness and fulfillment. Is it: this is the road to a snowball of problems that you will be miserably digging out of forever? Or one of many other possible messages. What do we learn? What do we walk away with? What does that person who cusses every other word bring to the story? Just a little food for thought. Thank you for pointing this out and reminding Christians to remember what is important.

I’m constantly reminded of how much judgement comes with an organized religion. One of many examples is right here… in this blog and among the comments. Were we not all created by God… and therefore should all be extentions of him (regardless of our beliefs)!
Judgment is a product of ego NOT love… and therefore could never be an action that is taken by God. His love is unconditional.
When asked his name, God replies “I am that I am”…
That God (whom created us) is in us all… so why judge another? Remember… ‘they are who they are’!!
Melissa
Taylor, you are judging me, aren’t you? We all make judgments.
Taylor
Oh absolutely not. And I do apologize if my comment came across as judgmental in ANY way!
As my comment stated, your blog and the comments on it, reminded me of the judgments that come with organized religion. And I am vague because, to a degree, it comes with ALL organized religions.
You will not receive any judgment from me. There are obvious differences in our views/beliefs. It was not my intention to judge those differences, just recognize them and embrace them. I am completely content with my beliefs… as I am sure you are with yours 🙂
I have no doubt that everyone here has formed their beliefs based on the condition of their lives. Nothing wrong with that.
I’ll always contribute my views on a public blog and share/extend love when I have the opportunity.
M Christopher
Some of you people have way too much time on your hands, if you can sit around and judge and tear down others so indiscriminately. It keeps me busy enough just trying to keep myself right with The Lord. As busy as the devil is these days in all aspects around me with temptation to be judgemental and critical of others just to name a couple of things, I leave the good Lord’s work up to him. I need help from Him just to keep me out of hot water. How on earth do y’all manage to be so perfect that you can sit back and critique your fellow brothers and sisters while our time here on earth is so limited? Just wandering. MM is an actor by profession. You can go see his movies or not. But, under the surface, generally there is a storyline being told. Life is not pretty. There are all kinds of people out there – just trying to get by, and if they don’t know The Lord – their lives probably are awfully messed up. It would be much nicer to see a fairy tale, I know, but sometimes we need to realize how badly others need our help and sympathy, …… not out judgement.
Jammie Burwell
I am on the fence with your post. I believe God has created each of us for a purpose, and we were placed in this world for such a time as this. God knows MM’s heart. You do not. The point of the movie was to put a spotlight on HIV/AIDS at that particular time in history. Were all the explicit scenes in the movie necessary? Maybe, maybe not. I have followed MM’s career. He has grown and changed over the years. I loved that he thanked God, his parents, and his wife. I loved that he put himself last. I loved that he gave God the glory. His relationship with Christ is his business. Just like your relationship with Christ is your business. We are all sinners and fall short of the glory of The Lord. We are all a work in progress until the work is complete or until we see Christ face to face. Is MM a hero for what he said at the Oscars? No, but it was brave considering the crowd. He has to stand before The Lord and answer for his sins, as do the rest of us. I would say it was good that when he had the opportunity to glorify The Lord or himself, he chose to glorify God. You are correct about all the scripture you put in your post and responses to comments. You may be further along in your walk with The Lord than MM. I wish we, as Christians, could come together and celebrate other Christians no matter where each person is on their journey with The Lord. God is writing MM’s story, just as He is writing yours. Why can’t we support MM on his journey?
Whitney
Perfectly expressed!
Cristian
Pretty interesting that a guy can’t be a Christian role-model over a “tiny issue”.
Bailey
The movie is about a man who turns his life around when he discovers he has AIDS and then learns to love and accept the social outcasts he once hated. Sounds like Christian values to me.
Hilary
Jesus did not name this as turning one’s life around. Repentence of sin and falling prostrate before the living God is turning one’s life around. Receiving the free gift of eternal life through the Cross is turning one’s life around.
Dori Cook
THANK YOU!! I stumbled on your blog today. It is kind of weird…everything I was thinking yesterday you wrote!
As my Christian friends one after another were posting Matthew’s acceptance speech OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN yesterday, my stomach was turning a little bit more with each post. I wanted to say each and every time – “Wait, what? Has anyone even seen this movie (I haven’t) and does anyone remember ‘Magic Mike? (haven’t seen that either)'”
(And for the record, before everyone calls me hyper-Christian, I have seen some of his movies — The Wedding Planner, We Are Marshall and something with Kate Hudson. Each movie had it’s fair share of good moments, but some not so good either – saying all of this to say – I’m not a saint!)
At any rate, I guess his comments start dialogues like this and I hope that maybe some between people who are not of faith. I hope that someone who doesn’t know Christ asks me what I think. And then I will speak the truth in love:
1. God loves Matthew.
2. God hates sin.
3. Christians are held accountable for what we do, say, and yes, even what we watch.
I just heard last month in a Bible study on Nehemiah something like this: We can rationalize why we go see movies that are filled with sin. We can laugh at television shows that are inappropriate. We can do this and say, “Well, I know it isn’t very nice, but it is funny and I can take good with the bad. It’s funny!”
If it put Jesus on the cross, it isn’t funny. And slapping a “Thank you” to God doesn’t make it okay.
Melissa Ryan
This is ignorant, judgemental and irresponsible to all those who call themselves Christians. You are condemning people for celebrating a man portaying a life that really happened and passing judgement on everyone in between. You are not the judge nor the jury in any situation so kindly remove yourself from that position.
Melissa
Melissa, you are judging me. Rather harshly, too!
Melissa Ryan
And stop saying that anyone who disagrees with you is just “judging you”. You sound idiotic. If you stand in such a strong stance own it.
Melissa Ryan
No sweetheart it’s not judging you it’s calling a thing a thing. You are making claims that making mistakes is not christian of us. In reality, it’s accepting our neighbors and loving them whether we agree with what they’re doing or not. You are drawing lines in the invisible sand of humanity and making it seem that you are above certain people.
Melissa
Melissa, I’m trying to make the point that we’re all making judgments. Basically, you don’t agree with my opinion and you are judging me for it. I’m sorry if that sounds idiotic! Thanks for stopping by and for your comments.
Tammy
Melissa, in my comment, I said We all sound like We are judging a bit. Included myself, as you are right in that We are always judging. It is second nature. We just need to recognize when it is necessary as needed for survival or if it could be crossing the line of what is Gods area and could have a negative impact on someone. I didn’t point you out as a judge, stating that God uses each person to reach others in their own way. Your blog will reach those who need to hear your heart, and others may be reached by seeing or hearing another viewpoint. I liked your blog, only added my opinion, which is the other side of the window. Both are views to consider as We all walk toward being more Christlike.
Melissa
Thank you for this gracious response, Tammy! I appreciate your views.
hterry
As Christians we should pray for him and hope he sees what you see. We should not write an article about how horrible a Christian he is. As a Christian we should understand that the bible states we are not perfect and can easily get caught up in the world and make mistakes. I’m so tired of “Christians” putting down everyone that even looks wrong!
Shelby
Although I appreciate that he thanked God, I am saddened that he thinks his dad is in heaven wearing his underwear and eating gumbo with a beer in his hand.
Norman Rockwell
Of all things to be saddened by, why does that bother you in the least? Is it that you believe that beer is inherently evil and won’t be in heaven? Are you judging that his dad wasn’t a real Christian and is actually in hell? Or are you just basing your line of thought on common Christian perceptions of heaven and that material pleasures aren’t allowed?
No matter what the case, that’s a very ignorant comment to make. Besides, everyone knows that he most likely doesn’t mean it literally: he is reflecting on the pride his dad would have, his dad’s nature in this life and his nostalgia of that nature, and his hope to be reunited one day. So don’t be sad, there are much bigger issues to worry about.
Patti
I can’t imagine being saddened by this. He seemed to be reminiscing about his dad and when he remembered him happy. This part actually made me smile!
Lee
Why does it bother you that he think part of heaven for his dad is gumbo and beer?
D.Kirk Stephens
how do you know he dosn’t love people. or treasure God’s word enough to share with others the fruits of the spirit. is his heart tender to the mercies of God and demonstrate it to others. does he love God with all his being. you judge based on a movie that is detestable
Adrena
I thought you might find this interesting.
Matthew 7:1-5
English Standard Version (ESV)
Judging Others
7 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
Mary Lee
I don’t think its judgement just saying don’t glorify the man or try and make him a hero for mentioning Gods name.
sheridan sechter
I’m nearly 50, but I still can be surprised at how judgmental the religious can be. Adrena, thank you for posting that passage because that’s the one I had in mind when I read this blog entry. If we are waiting for the faithful to be perfect in the eyes of other Christians, then I’m sure that we will all be disappointed and prone to judgment. However, the faithful are certainly recognized by God. And, that is all that matters. Perhaps you were trying to make the point that celebrities are no more special than the rest of us; with that, I would agree. We are all special in the eyes of The Lord.
Abbie
THANK U!! I posted a similar thought yesterday after being so exasperated by all the Christians freaking out over him thanking God (then going on about his version of heaven…his dad in his underwear drinking miller light!) and of course I got someone mad and calling me a Judgmental Christian and being a bad example of Christians blah blah. The Bible says we will be known by our FRUIT!
Trent Taylor
How disappointing reading through the comments to see people try and defend the roles he has played. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 tells us to flee the very appearance of evil. As a man, I know the importance if protecting my eyes. I don’t watch movies with nudity, though the flesh wants to. This is dishonoring to God and to my wife. Now imagine how his wife, let alone God, must feel when he is involved in raunchy sex scenes. Now that being said, I am not his Holy Spirit. Matthew 7:15-20 talks about knowing a tree by the fruit it bears. These movies are bad fruit and he is the tree. Now you decide for yourself what that means.
Tammie
Right on! He ended his speech by saying that his dad was in heaven, looking down, with gumbo, a beer, lemon pie, and dancing. Yeah, right. (Said sarcastically, as I roll my eyes).

Reblogged this on Who Me? and commented:
“We have got to get over our obsession with celebrity and start making connections between what people say and what they actually do.”
